GeoNames monthly diff report (July 2025)

GeoIP and GeoLite databases incorporate GeoNames geographical data, which is made available under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 License.

Monthly updates to GeoNames data are incorporated into our databases as we refresh them. Above you will find a CSV report of these changes as they apply to English place names for the month of June as they relate to the following fields:

subdivision_1_iso_code
subdivision_2_iso_code

Note that the values for the old_ and new_ columns for a given field only differ for the field defined in the diff_in column.

Download interruption incident—resolved

We have identified the issue and the incident has been resolved.

Off schedule release for a number of GeoIP and GeoLite databases

Today, Monday, June 16, 2025, we are issuing an off-schedule release of the following GeoIP and GeoLite databases:

GeoIP Country
GeoIP City
GeoIP Enterprise
GeoIP ISP
GeoLite Country
GeoLite City

An issue occurred on Friday, June 13 that caused the above databases to not be available for download as expected. We are releasing new databases today, and will return to the normal release schedule tomorrow (June 17).

Today, Wednesday, May 28, 2025, we have issued an off-schedule release of the following GeoIP databases:

GeoIP Enterprise
GeoIP ISP
GeoLite Country
GeoLite City

This release corrects a small number of identified location accuracy issues.

GeoLite City and Country database releases delayed

The GeoIP database updates for Tuesday, May 13, 2025 for the following databases won’t be released as scheduled:

GeoLite Country database

These databases will return to their regular release schedule on Friday, May 16, 2025.

Resolved - Postal code validation bug

We have resolved the bug that resulted in a number of incorrect and invalid values for postal codes.

Upcoming changes to ISP names

We are updating several ISP names in our data to match their current naming and branding conventions. We expect to release these changes in new database updates and web service requests beginning Tuesday, May 6, 2025.

Generate custom CSVs with the latest mmdbinspect release

You can now use the newest mmdbinspect release and the jq utility to generate custom CSVs.

Here is an example showing how to process the output with the -jsonl flag and the jq utility.

Increase in geolocation database sizes

Our IP geolocation databases released on Tuesday, March 4, 2025 will be significantly larger than our last release.

This increase in size is expected and affects the following databases:

GeoIP City database
GeoIP Country database
GeoIP Enterprise database
GeoLite City database
GeoLite Country database

GeoIP Anonymous IP database release delayed

The GeoIP Anonymous IP database was not released on Saturday, February 15 or Sunday, February 16, 2025.

This delay was due to a small issue with our deployment process. This issue has been resolved.

The GeoIP Anonymous IP database will return to its regular release schedule on Monday, February 17, 2025.

Removal of deprecated fields

We are removing the long-deprecated fields is_anonymous_proxy and is_satellite_provider from all web services and all MMDB format databases. This will be a non-breaking change.

These columns will be set to0 for all rows in CSV-format databases.

Update—Identifying Verizon 5g Home Internet

As announced in our previous release note, we are reclassifying a portion of Verizon Wireless networks in the United States.

In addition to reclassifying the ISP name from Verizon Wireless to
Verizon 5g Home Internet, we will also be reclassifying the organization name for consistency.

Starting on Friday, February 7, networks that have their ISP name set to Verizon 5g Home Internet will also have their organization name set to Verizon 5g Home Internet.

The following products and services will be affected:

GeoIP Enterprise database
GeoIP Insights and City Plus web services
GeoIP ISP database
minFraud Insights and Factors web services

Identifying Verizon 5g Home Internet

Starting on Tuesday, February 4, we will be making changes to identify more fixed wireless networks. We are starting with Verizon Wireless networks in the United States.

Beginning with database releases on Tuesday, February 4, about 15% of traffic previously identified with ISP name Verizon Wireless will be reclassified.

These networks will have their ISP name set to Verizon 5g Home Internet and they will have their user_type set to residential. Their connection_type will remain set to Cellular.

minFraud Insights and Factors web services

metro_code deprecation in GeoIP

The metro_code data in our GeoIP products and services is a no-longer-maintained code. Because Google does not use or publish these codes any longer, the metro_code field has now been deprecated in our GeoIP products and services.

What should I do?

The field will not be removed from our databases and existing values will continue to be populated, so you can continue using it if you find it valuable.
